Today I scored a free secretary cabinet off of my local Buy-Nothing Group. This was an excellent find, as I’d originally had the idea to incorporate a full-height secretary hutch into my kitchen plan, but couldn’t figure out a good way to really make it work. Without the full-height hutch, though, I figure I can wedge this among the normal cabinetry next to the stove/oven station, and gain a really sweet coffee station in the process. The drawers will be your basic kitchen drawers, maybe also a tool drawer or two. We’ll see.

The cabinet is solid oak, and the seller said it belonged to her mom when she was a kid, so I’m putting it at around 45-50 years old. It could use a little sprucing on the top and the sides, but even without that this will make an excellent little built-in. Remarkably, she even still had the key to secure the top so that’s a bonus place to stash kitchen things when I need to pack up to move the bus!

I didn’t get out to work on the floor at all this week, which is mildly disappointing since I have the paint and am ready to get going on that. I’m a little concerned that the wire cup I got to grind out the rust isn’t going to work so well, and I’ll need to switch to a more robust wire wheel and the grinder, and I’ve let that concern keep me from going out to work at all. I’m trying to be okay about it, recognize that this is a process, and that even if I don’t manage to get any work done, I’m still doing things like getting free furniture to make some progress toward the complete plan.

I swear, I’m incorporating so much finished furniture into this housebus, I’ll probably be able to move in like as soon as the walls are done. I’m trying to not have to build as much of the furniture as possible, just to move it into place and secure it to the walls. Once I get to the point where I can start moving in furniture, this housebus is going to become livable in like a week. Gonna be great!
