Hey, gang! Happy to report a little bit more progress on the bus this week. A lot of it has been about reclaiming some good building materials from some old constructions I’ve had sitting around in my yard for a couple years now, but the big good news is I got another great score from my favorite sourcing website, Free Craigslist: Some really decent kitchen cabinets!

So, the obvious flaw with these cabinets is simply that the fronts of the drawers and door are, as my girlfriend put it, “so extremely Eighties.” They’re basic, inexpensive particleboard with this melamine veneer, which is not a part of what I want to do with my housebus. Like, AT ALL. I’m trying to avoid these materials like the plague just because they tend to wear out fairly quickly, are really susceptible to moisture damage, and franly just visually not very interesting.

BUT! The rest of the cabinets are solid wood, and the drawers are even built properly, with a separate face and everything. But the thing that finally got me off my couch and driving across town (two trips!) to pick these up and bring them back to the bus is this fantastic slide-out butcher block cutting board counter! Just look at that! So much extra space, and study durable slides that can hold some decent weight.

Kitchen cabinets open, showing off the full-depth slide-out butcher block countertop.

And besides, drawer fronts are so easy to find or make from scratch, I should have no problem replacing them sometime down the road. And now I have the beginnings of my kitchen cabinets, so that’s pretty cool.

Next up is finally measuring and cutting the wood for my window deletes. If I can find some free tyvek and some tape this week I should even be able to install them and put up the first areas of cedar shingles! Fingers crossed.
