Hey, all! This should come as little to no surprise, but Meta this week revealed itself to be a truly cruel and regressive company, rolling back policies designed to protect vulnerable communities from online harassment. Like, we’ve always kind of known they were not a great platform, but this week they made it their mission. Not only did they remove these protections, they have made it explicitly clear that they are an anti-LGBTQ+ corporation, going so far as removing tampons and pads from the mens’ restrooms and removing Queer Pride-related themes from the Messenger app.
In light of this, I’ve removed myself from Facebook and will be deleting my Instagram as well soon. My plan is to start posting here more often, and also keeping active on my last remaining social media account over at BlueSky.
As far as Instagram replacements go, I want to look more into PixelFed, a Mastadon-like ‘federated’ network designed for sharing images. You know, how Instagram used to be.
I really want to spend some time this year working to help bring the web back to how it was before Facebook, where everyone just had their own website and their own personality, instead of everything looking the same and being run by like four or five companies.
Couple things I want to do toward that end are redesigning this website to include more social links – webrings, link-shares, and the like. And also to build a modern RSS-reader desktop app now that I’m learning how to program. There’s some already out there for sure, but I always want one that’s more customizable and that can handle both News feeds and podcasts.
