This week I’m paying tribute to the artists whose discovery on YouTube inspired me to take up the Ukulele – not because they made it look easy (though they do!) but because they made it look fun!
Julia’s renditions of various 60s classics caught my attention so hard, and her cover of Ben Folds’s Gone earned her a special appearance on Ben Folds’s stage one tour!
A couple months ago I made the probably-too-hasty decision to jettison a domain that I’d been using as a catch-all ‘personal brand’ for nearly ten years, LunarBistro.com. I had several reasons for that, but the primary one was simply that I wasn’t using it in the way that I had always hoped to, which was as a creative hub for all of the projects I had going on – comics, stories, games, commissioned art, illustration-for-hire, design, etc. When I used it to promote my comics, it seemed redundant since the comics each had their own sites anyway, and when I was using it to promote the games, I didn’t leave any room for anything else. I could have gone the movie route, since that’s the Thor I’m honestly most familiar, but I’ve always had a soft-spot for the comic’s 70s/80s costume. It’s got that great blend of impractical and really strong design that set it apart from every other superhero costume.

I didn’t expect to enjoy this show as much as I do. The whole first season is on Netflix. I really enjoy the scripts, and the bro-ship between the three male leads is fun to watch.

I’ve been a fan of Game of Thrones since about halfway through the first season, when I finally decided to sit down and watch it. I hadn’t read the books at that point, and had no idea what was coming up (the Sept of Baelor was an eye-opening experience for me, let me tell you!). From the beginning, though, I loved the character of Jon Snow and his direwolf Ghost. I enjoyed every part of his story so far in the books, and am anxiously awaiting the next one to find out the resolution to his latest developments at the end of book 5 (!).
This piece is a good example of one of the commission tiers I’m working up. More than a basic 1-hour drawing, this ‘Character Commission’ took about 90 minutes, but about half of that was just getting the costume right. Enjoy!
