They’re searching the Yonder Blue / They look out for ‘Number 2’…
Lincoln, track 9: Pencil Rain. (Listen on iTunes)
Pencil Rain is another example of the way that TMBG manages to take a really bleak and dismal concept – a platoon of soldiers on the battlefield, awaiting a final barrage (a hail of lead) and paint it with a new metaphor – “Pencil Rain”. They almost succeed in making the sacrifice sound noble rather than pointless (yeah, I did that), but only almost.
Black Coffee’s not enough for me / I need a better friend.
Lincoln, track 3: Lie Still, Little Bottle. (Listen on iTunes)
A bleak song about addiction and escape, but the bridge always leaves me with the impression of the narrator being beaten down by the last pill in the bottle. The frenzied, overlapping background here is intended to mirror the driving bass line of the song.
The yellow Roosevelt Avenue leaf overturned / The ardor of arboreality is an adventure we have spurned…
Lincoln, track 2: Cowtown. (Sample on iTunes)
In my head the cows in this song always resembled manatees. The clouds and city skyline are both intended to mirror the musical line behind the lyrics. At least, that’s the idea.
