An uncharacteristically heart-breaking song from the band best-known for their cover of The Four Lads’ “Istanbul (not Constantinople)”. The couple in ‘Match’ clearly had a solid start, but then life interceded, and the entropy that infects most long-term relationships crept in and took over, to the point where neither of them even know if they can trust the other, or themselves.

Cage & Aquarium is just dripping with paranoia, and the fear of losing your privacy. I always imagined the protagonist of this one being so steeped in his own mind that he felt that the safest place to live was in a house inside a fishbowl. But then the ominous fishhook arrived, and now he doesn’t know what to do about it.

Here it is, probably one of my favorite TMBG tracks of all time. The paranoia, the desperation, always wondering what’s going on, trying to see behind yourself, knowing there’s danger there but needing to try anyway. How long before this guy goes nuts and just starts breaking mirrors? How long before he cuts himself to death on the broken glass?
